Crystal Singing Bowls

Crystal Bowls have become popular since the 1980s particularly in meditation practices, for personal wellness, and as a complimentary medicine, particularly within the yoga and wellness community.

There has been claims of their usage in antiquity, however no concrete evidence suggests this to be the case. More accurate is that the origin comes from the Silicon Valley where bowls were made to grow chips for computers, and their pure tones were discovered. Another theory claims the solar industry created them and discarded bowls they did not feel were adequate. Either way, it did not take long for the creation of precisely designed bowls to find their way into sound healing.

With all sound healing instruments, awareness and intent will heighten the physiological and psychological benefits of hearing and being immersed in their tones by a skilled practitioner. These bowls stir within the listener subjective qualities, yet quite measurable, of deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and access to deep emotions and states of well being.

Claims of chakra balancing commonly are made and even marketed as such with a larger lay arbitrary diatonic scale representing the chakras from the root to the crown beginning on the note C. Though not proven or empirically studied or guaranteed, the pure, round tone, coupled in certain harmonious intervals certainly open the door to such an occurrence. Once in this state, a client can come to a place of rest and homeostasis where self-generative healing can occur. Dr. Mitchell Gaynor, MD, pioneered this particular protocol. Claims are also made that some bowls resonate with specific body parts. Acceptance of this claim outright would be irresponsible, yet denial of the possibility could become an energetic impediment to healing. Always, it is best to go into a session with an open mind, and to a skilled practitioner.

The playing generally falls into two categories: singing the bowl with a suede or silicon wand, and or gently tapping the bowl. Though quickly attaining a pure, round tone, a knowledge of the intervalic structures, resolutions, and harmonic layering leads from a place of ‘sounding good’ to a ‘healing experience’. To debunk another claim, the bowls are made of silica hpq sand (high purity quartz). The assertion made was it then had piezoelectric properties to store, focus, magnify, and even transfer energy. However, because the sand is headed to 4000 degrees, the quartz is broken down and becomes amorphous thus debunking this claim. Still, the sound remains subjectively beautiful to the ear of the beholder.
